There is a lot more variety and cool minor effects sprinkled over the game when compared to KM and that is just more fun. WotR has a lot more reactivity to your race, class and choices when compared to Kingmaker and that is pretty fun. The visuals in WotR are definetly a step above KM, i doubt anyone would deny it.

Oh, and the point buy is 20 compared to the companions which spread from like low 25 to 30something. Other than that you're not missing out on anything. Because the game is unbalanced and the devs are still patching things. The reason mercenaries are expensive is because buying a 20 point buy character of your level to fulfill a specific party task is much more gold efficient than pretty much any magic item you could conceivably buy in the game.

Mercenaries are an excellent way to experiment with builds you might be wanting to try or to fix issues with your party you might be having. Personally I love them. The base companions have good storytelling, but mercs are great for fighting. Optimized Mercs are mechanically superior to most of the companions.
